Classic red sangria

Fruity, refreshing and made for sharing, this classic red sangria is a crowd-pleaser all year round. Dry red wine, fresh orange juice and a splash of brandy are sweetened just enough. Then you load the jug with oranges, apples, berries and a cinnamon stick. Stir it together in 15 minutes and let the fridge do the rest.

Prep: 15 mins
Chill: at least 2 hours
Serves 6–8

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine, such as Tempranillo or Garnacha
  • ¾ cup (about 180ml) fresh orange juice
  • ½ cup (about 120ml) brandy
  • ¼ cup (about 50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced or cut into chunks
  • 1 cup (about 150g) fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup (about 150g) fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick (about 3in/7.5cm)

Method

  1. Mix the base. In a large jug or pitcher, stir together the wine, orange juice, brandy and sugar until the sugar has mostly dissolved.
  2. Add the fruit. Stir in the orange slices, apple, blueberries, strawberries and cinnamon stick.
  3. Chill. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight, so the fruit softens and the flavours blend.
  4. Serve. Pour over ice, spooning some of the fruit into each glass.

Tips

  • No need for an expensive wine. A budget-friendly dry red works perfectly. Spanish reds are traditional, but Merlot, Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon are good too.
  • Choose sturdy fruit. Apples, oranges and berries hold up well during chilling. In winter, try pears, cranberries or pomegranate. In summer, peaches, cherries or blackberries.
  • Make ahead: it keeps covered in the fridge for up to 1 day, and the flavour gets even better.
  • Serve with tapas such as patatas bravas or Spanish tortilla.
